Cooperation with AEWA on the International Working Group for the Dalmatian Pelican

The International Working Group on the Dalmatian Pelican is being established to contribute to the conservation of the species across its entire range—from Europe to Southeast Asia.
The formation of the group is part of the ongoing monitoring of the implementation of the International Single Species Action Plan for the Conservation of the Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus) and is being carried out through the collaboration between AEWA (Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds) and the Society for the Protection of Prespa.

The Working Group will be composed of expert scientists and government officials from 17 countries, strengthening international cooperation and collective action to address the major threats facing the species.
It will serve as a functional community that facilitates information exchange, monitors the implementation of conservation measures, and organizes joint actions and events.

The extensive experience of the Society for the Protection of Prespa and the Hellenic Ornithological Society in the study and protection of the species—as well as their contribution to the drafting of the International Action Plan (2018)—forms the foundation upon which the Working Group has been designed.

The species continues to face serious pressures, including wetland degradation, mortality caused by energy infrastructure, and climate change. The Working Group aims to act as a connecting link among countries, organizations, and institutions, ensuring that conservation actions are designed and implemented in a coordinated and effective manner, both at national and international levels.
