The remains of the lakeshore church of Agia Anna were discovered by local people, following a fall in the water level of Lesser Prespa Lake. In collaboration with the Ephorate of Byzantine Monuments of Kastoria, the Society for the Protection of Prespa moved to help carry out basic restoration of the Byzantine church dedicated to Saint Anna, that would protect the remains from further deterioration.
Funded by the SPP’s MAVA Foundation grant, this small project instigated a vigorous and positive interest of locals in wetland management, as the church was situated exactly at the edge of the ecologically valuable wet meadow zone around Lesser Prespa Lake.
