The remains of the lakeshore church of Agia Anna were discovered by local people, following a fall in the water level of Lesser Prespa Lake. The Society for the Protection of Prespa (SPP) moved, through collaboration with the Ephorate of Byzantine Monuments of Kastoria, to ensure the basic restoration of the Byzantine church dedicated to Saint Anna, which was carried out by the Ephorate, protecting the remains from further deterioration.
Funded by the SPP’s MAVA Foundation grant, this small project instigated a vigorous and positive interest of locals in wetland management, as the church was situated exactly at the edge of the ecologically valuable wet meadow zone around Lesser Prespa Lake.
