Unexplored Prespa

Unveiling the Hidden Treasures of Prespa

Prespa is a unique place where nature and people have coexisted in harmony for centuries. The new project of the Society for the Protection of Prespa, in collaboration with the Municipality of Prespa, aims to highlight this rare mosaic of natural and cultural values by promoting gentle development and ecotourism, always with respect for the environment and the local community.

The Prespa region is one of the most important natural treasures of Greece and Southeastern Europe.

Its lakes, mountains, and small villages host rich biodiversity, rare species of birds and plants, as well as monuments that testify to a long-standing cultural presence. The local community, whose main activities are agriculture and fishing, is increasingly turning toward mild tourism, seeking sustainable development paths that support the local economy without undermining the area’s natural capital.

Within this context, this project of the SPP focuses on highlighting lesser-known areas, such as Mount Triklario – locally known as Sfika –  which conceal invaluable natural and cultural treasures. Through targeted actions, the project seeks to showcase their unique ecological and aesthetic value, strengthen environmental awareness, and propose new forms of gentle tourism activities.

The main pillars of the project include:

A communication campaign involving the creation of audiovisual material and podcasts that will showcase the natural and cultural values of Prespa through the voices of its people.

Research and design of mountain-based activities, such as hiking, photographic and educational tourism, agritourism, and environmental interpretation, connecting nature with local production and tradition.

An educational initiative for the preservation of traditional orchards in Sfika, aimed at saving old apple varieties and reviving local agricultural heritage.

Promotion of the geological heritage of the limestone landscapes of Triklario and Vronteró through informative and educational material.

Creation of a database on the region’s mycoflora (mushrooms and truffles), which will serve as a living tool for knowledge dissemination and the promotion of nature-based tourism.

The overall goal of the project is to promote and sustainably utilize the natural and cultural wealth of Prespa, strengthening the local economy and environmental awareness. Prespa is more than a destination; it is a living laboratory of coexistence between humans and nature – an example of how environmental protection can serve as a driver of development and prosperity.
