Prespa has been inhabited by people for centuries. Unlike other national parks or protected areas, its landscape is the result of the ongoing interaction between humans and nature, and for this reason human activities have never been prohibited here.
However, the demographic challenge, combined with other factors, is disrupting this unique balance of life in Prespa. In response to these challenges, the idea of Poliprespa was born.
During the six years in which the initiative was supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, more than 70 actions were implemented in areas such as the environment, the primary sector, culture, and education. Along the way, foundations, organizations, associations, and other institutions became valuable partners and supporters of Poliprespa, each contributing their expertise and creativity to the shared path toward sustainable development — a path that ultimately proved to be one of collaboration.
The cooperation among local stakeholders — first and foremost among themselves, but also with all those who supported the effort from within Prespa and from around the world — was the key to Poliprespa’s success.
Participation, engagement, the exchange and cross-fertilization of ideas, dialogue, and above all the persistence of people working toward a common goal — a better future for nature and humanity — were and continue to be the core message of Poliprespa.
This year marks ten years since the idea was first put on paper, took shape, gained substance, and began its journey toward implementation. The 2026 calendar presents a small selection of the actions that have taken place; it is a commemorative album of what has been achieved in recent years and what continues to evolve, and it aspires to serve as a source of inspiration for all those who work tirelessly for a better future.
